Before we begin, we’d like to be among the first to say Welcome to Virginia Tech!Fall is right around the corner, and you’re probably wondering how you’ll spend your time. From Greek Life to Clubs and Orgs, there are plenty of ways to make the campus seem a whole lot smaller. We’ve narrowed down some of the awesome opportunities that you as a first-year student can get involved with that start within the first couple weeks of classes. These certainly aren’t all of the ones you’ll find around campus, but here’s our list of the ones perfect for students who want to hit the ground running.

flexFLEX (Freshmen Leadership Experience)

Hosted by the Student Government Association, this year-long opportunity connects students with the workings of SGA and is designed to empower the next generation of campus leaders. Recruiting about 30 students, FLEX is perfect for students looking for a close-knit experience.

relayRelay for Life Committee

While the Relay for Life event isn’t until the Spring semester, committee and exec applications close relatively early. If you’re a student looking to build up something long term and want to support a great cause, this may be the opportunity for you.

vtuVirginia Tech Union (VTU)

VTU plans and coordinates some of the largest events on campus, ranging from Passion Pit to Juicy J. This year they’re starting off early with the Avett Brothers on September 11th. While there isn’t a formal application to get involved, interested students are encouraged to get involved early. For more information, contact Hannah Thomas ( or Michael Brown (

Work with Dining Services

If volunteering isn’t your thing, how about a part time job? Dining Services is one of many departments looking to fill student positions for this upcoming fall. Benefits are usually good, and many departments on campus are very flexible with scheduling. Jobs on campus specifically for students can be found on the VT Jobs Page
